Preventing Privacy Breaches: Part 1
Preparation is Key
With the increased amount of dependence on technology, every business needs to be aware of how to protect themselves and their customers from privacy breaches. As technology has evolved, so too have the criminals that try to take advantage of people that are unprepared. Today, instead of ensuring you have a strong lock on the front and back door of your shop, you need to ensure that your data and sensitive client information are secure.
If you use three locks on your bike and put it 20 feet in the air, you never really need to worry about someone riding away with it. The best way to deal with breaches in security is to prevent them from ever happening.
Here are a few steps to prepare your business for potential breaches:
1) Know what data you have, where it is, and what is currently being done with it. Take inventory of the data you keep. What needs to be protected? When and where is personal or business data collected? Who has access to it?
2) Understand the places that hackers can sneak in. Conduct risk assessments and penetration tests within your own organization to identify threats. Cyber security organizations can be a huge benefit to your company. It’s hard to lock a door that you didn’t know existed.
3) Know your industry. If a cyber attack worked on your competition down the road from you, there’s a good chance that an attacker will use similar or identical tactics to get your information. Keep up to date and aware. Preparation is the key to success.
